Moj Rođendan

On February 16th I turned 18 in Croatia!

Turning 18 in Croatia is a big deal. Once 18 you can vote, drive, buy alcohol and tobacco and are considered an adult.

Osijek ~ Part 2

After Exploring thee Center of Osijek I walked along the promenade alongside the Drava river to Tvrđa. Tvrđa is the old fortress in Osijek. This self contained Hapsburg fortress was built in the 18th Century to defend the area. The fort was built primarily on the site of a Roman settlement.

Approaching the fort.

Corner of the Fort.

Bastion in the fort wall.

Window in the wall.

Inside the Forts walls.
Tvrđa is a well preserved baroque military compound.

Looking from atop the forts wall across the river. There are a bunch of man made caves. (I do not know their purpose or use)
View of the bastion from atop the wall.

Me atop the wall in the rain.
Looking at the fort walls and the main entrance gate.

One of the main cobblestone streets.
The main square in Tvrđa.
The Pillory in the center of the square. Unfortunately it was covered up as it was being renovated.

The old City Hall.
More of the main square.

Spring flowers.

St. Michael's Church.

Tower of St. Michael's Church.
Cobblestone street.
Bullet hole covered building.

More bullet holes.

Leaving the fort.

Bridges over the Drava river. Looking back at Tvrđa.

Boat beneath the bridge.
I walked away from Tvrđa, across the bridge to these peculiar tunnels. I don't know what their purpose is or was but they were interesting to walk around. Here are some pictures of them:

Inside the tunnel like buildings.

Walking back along the Drava to the city center.

Tvrđa once more.
The suspension bridge.
