Quick trip to Čakovec

After school on Wednesday the 5th Kevin and I took a short day trip to the nearby town of Čakovec. We didn't know anything about the town or what it had to offer. We just wanted to go and explore.

Mobility is great here, in ten minutes we can travel to a nearby town for 9.50 kuna.(About 2 dollars) When we got off the train we asked where the town center was and just headed in that direction.

Here are some pictures from our short trip.

The train that took us to Čakovec.

Čakovec is located in the northern part of Croatia in the Međimurje County. In the second half of the 13th century Count Dmitar Čak built a tower, "Čak's Turen", that Čakovec was named after.

As we walked into the city center we saw a sign for the city museum which is located in the old castle so we decided to go and check it out.
The Museum of Međimurje County is a general museum that was founded in 1954. The permanent exhibit at the Museum consists of exhibits belonging to the history and culture of the Međimurje County. The museum is divided into sections: Archaeological, Historical, Cultural and Historical, Ethnographic and Art Gallery section.

Nikola Šubić Zrinski began the construction of a strong Renaissance fortress in 1550. The construction wasn't completed until a hundred years later by Nikola's grand grandson Nikola Zrinski of Čakovec. The construction of the luxurious Renaissance-styled palace situated within the the fortification walls was completed in 1638. After an earthquake in 1738, Anton Erhard Marinelli reconstructed and renewed the whole complex in the Baroque style.
The castle consists of the 13th Century tower of Chaktornya, the defensive wall and one storey "Old Castle", and the impressive "New Castle" which is the main four storey palace. The New Castle is a rectangular building with a central courtyard. The Old Castle was once a prison but is now undergoing renovations.

We then walked around the town square.
The building behind the flags is the Trgovacki Casino. (Merchant's Casino) It was built in 1903 in Hungarian Secession style. The main function of its main room was card playing, but this Casino had nothing to do with gambling. The purpose of this building was primarily social gatherings of Čakovec's upper and middle class citizens: besides the cards room there was a special room for the ladies, reading room and a ball room. We didn't go inside.

Looking down the main street in the center.

St. Nicholas Church and Franciscan Monastery. This Baroque church was built in 1728 and now dominates the Franciscan square in Čakovec.
