How Varaždin lost its status

This is the story of the fire of 1776. I thought it was interesting so I will share it:

In 1756 the Ban Franjo Nadasdy chose Varaždin as his official residence, making Varaždin the Capital of all of Croatia.

The Fire of 1776

"Varaždin lost its status of the capital because of smoking. On the ill-fated 25 April, 1776, a fire broke out on a roof of a farm-stead, do to the carelessness of a boy who dropped a cigar into hay. the farmstead caught fire. The wind blew towards the city and soon all the houses outside the city walls were on fire. Blown by the wind, the flames then reached the houses within the walls. To make matters worse, in the cellar of a merchant's house gun=powder was hidden and it detonated. Panic broke out. The city remained without defence. On the third day the fire was finally put out. It wiped out almost 80% of buildings. But the suffering was not over. Three months later on the day, Varaždin was struck by a storm beyond living memory. It was so violent that it tore down towers and roofs and uprooted trees. The Ban, the Royal Council, the Parliament, nobility, many citizens and handicraft men, all left the city."
After this incident the government was moved to Zagreb.
